Cracking of Laminates Subjected to Biaxial Tensile Strains

چکیده
During the processing of laminar ceramic, biaxial, residual stresses can arise due to differential thermal contraction between unlike layers. A tensile stress can cause pre-existing flaws to extend across the layer and into the adjacent layers and then tunnel until they meet either another crack or a free surface. A previous analysis has shown that for a given residual stress there is a critical layer thickness, below which no tunnel cracks will exist, regardless of initial flaw size. Here, the previous analysis was modified to take into account the crack extension into adjacent layers. To determine the validity of the analysis, laminates composed of alternating layers of zirconia and alumina/zirconia were fabricated by a sequential centrifugation technique. The composition of the alumina/zirconia layer was varied to change the biaxial, tensile stresses in the zirconia layer. Observations were then made to determine the critical layer thickness for tunnel cracks and their extension into the adjacent layers. These observations were compared to the theoretical predictions.

FRP Repair of Corrosion-Damaged Reinforced Concrete Beams
Corrosion of steel reinforcement is one of the main durability problems facing reinforced concrete infrastructures worldwide. This paper will summarize the results of a multi-phase experimental program undertaken at the University of Waterloo to investigate the viability of using externally bonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) laminates to rehabilitate corrosion-damaged reinforced concrete bea...
متن کاملInteraction of laminate damage and adhesive disbonding in composite scarf joints subjected to combined in-plane loading and impact
Impact tests were carried out on composite laminates and composite scarf repairs, while both were subjected to in-plane loading with tensile pre-strain levels up to 5000 microstrain. The results show that pre-straining of the composite laminates has no noticeable influence on the size of the delamination area for the given impact energy of 8 J, which represents a typical barely-visible impact o...
متن کاملDeterministic and Reliability-Based Optimization of Composite Laminates for Cryogenic Environments
Designs of composite laminates are investigated for hydrogen tanks in cryogenic environments. Large residual strains, which can develop due to thermal mismatch between matrix and bers, result in matrix cracking at cryogenic temperatures and increase hydrogen leakage through the tank wall. To reduce thermal mismatch, ply angles need to be close to each other, but this leads to a substantial we...

All impact analyses performed so far for the composite plates, have treated central impacts. Furthermore, investigations on influences of the in-plane biaxial compression, tension, or tension-compression preloads on various responses of the low-velocity impact, especially the indentation, have not been performed so far. In the present research, a finite element formulation is presented for resp...
متن کاملA Novel Two-Scale Progressive Failure Analysis Method for Laminated Fiber-Reinforced Composites
A novel, two-scale computational model has been developed to predict the progressive damage and failure responses of fiber-reinforced composite laminates using the material properties at the constituent (fiber and matrix) level. These properties were measured from coupon level tests on a unidirectional lamina of the same material system. In the proposed computational scheme, the macroscale fini...
